Rereading The Hobbit, for obvious reasons, and ran across a sentence that made my inner twelve-year-old snigger, thanks to the changing meaning of words over the years. From the chapter where the wood-elves capture and imprison Thorin:

Then the elves put thongs on him, and shut him in one of the inmost caves with strong wooden doors, and left him.

And thus were a thousand fanfics born.
