Latest Wordpress update broke the way the theme I made displays category posts (i.e., the list of categories gets a 404) so guess what I get to spend Labor Day doing? Yes, that's right, recoding a *&^*^& theme! Because now the ConDFW website doesn't display a nice list of guests when you ask it to, instead it displays a 404 page.

It's definitely fault of the child theme I coded--I've checked all the plugins and its not them, and it works when I deactivate the child theme and stops working when I re-activate it. Man, I don't even know where the hell to start looking to find the problem. :P

7/10/14 01:26 pm - Wordpress guys?

I'm using the Magazine Basic theme for this year's iteration of the ConDFW website, and there's one thing I'd like to do: have the sticky post and the first post beneath that on the home page supply the full content of that post, and the rest of them supply just excerpts. I figure I ought to be able to do this with an if...then statement, but (a) I don't know what I'm counting and (b) I don't know which file to put it in. (I think the answer to the latter is content.php, but given that you can change all the posts to excerpts or full-content from the admin area, I don't see where that plugs into content.php...)

Any ideas?

edit: I've answered (a), I think, by putting my own counter right before The Loop, and incrementing it right before The Loop loops, but (b) still eludes me, as editing content.php did absolutely nothing. Bah.

1/8/14 06:28 pm - While we're on the subject of ConDFW...

ConDFW is looking for someone to talk to about ahem, dragoon into heading a filk track! None of the current staff are filkers, and the filkers we've reached out to haven't responded yet.

So! If you attend ConDFW or know someone in the area who would, and filk, and want to perhaps becaome a shiny, happy, ConDFW staffer, please let me know

Edit: FOUND IT. A rogue plugin. BAH.

If anyone here has Wordpress experience and wants to help me troubleshoot a problem,* PLEASE VOLUNTEER.

At the moment, for some reason the menu system on the ConDFW site is b0rked and I cannot add new pages to the menu. Which means that the Costume Contest page is not linked anywhere on the site as of yet. I can do a temporary fix and put an update about the contest on the home page, but that's not going to help anyone once the update ages off the home page. I am afraid that it might be the new Wordpress update that I just did, and I really do not have time to try to fix this: I've got the short story contest and program book to worry about at the moment. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH

I can give you admin access to the site. THANK YOU to anyone who volunteers to help (I can give you free admission to the con if you're thinking of coming, or something off your Amazon wishlist or the like in recompense!)

* i.e., fix it for me.

EDIT: Oh, great, it's not just the menus. An internal search, when I'm linking something internally, hangs in precisely the same manner. ARGH. Possibly interaction between the theme and the new update. ARGH ARGH ARGH

11/26/13 09:36 am - Sheesh

Someone from Scranton, PA (or at least whose IP address hails from there) has been trying to hack the ConDFW website for, like, four hours. I've got it set so that if someone puts in the wrong password for 10 times in a row, they're banned for 15 minutes, and every 15 minutes this guy tries to log in again with some sort of variant of "admin" or "administrator" as the password. I finally went and permabanned the IP address. (I also have had "admin" and "administrator" banned as usernames since I installed WP, so he would never have succeeded, but it's the principle of the thing.)

I recommend the Wordfence plugin. It tells me when someone's temp-banned and why and gives me their IP address and the username they were trying to sign in with. This is how I know this.

10/7/13 10:05 am - House stuff

Toby and I spent the weekend ORGANIZING. Two guys from an appliance repair place came out and stacked our washer and dryer for us, so now we can use the door to the garage! That would be the second door to the garage, which goes through the laundry room, and it had been blocked by the litterboxes, which are now in the spot formerly occupied by the washing machine. No, we don't technically need that door, but it's nice to have it available.

(There was also a few hours Saturday night at FenCon for the ConDFW party, which we ended up attending for less time than we expected because Toby's allergies were giving him fits and he felt terrible, so we took off early. A good night's sleep proved that it was indeed most likely allergies and not a cold or other illness, which is good. There's a cold running around the library right now, and we know someone who just got over pneumonia, so we didn't want to take chances.)

7/11/13 11:24 am - ConDFW ad for Worldcon

Creating an ad for the Worldcon program book. I'm going to be posting on a graphic design forum elsewhere for advice as well, which is why I've got the text below the cut, as I didn't want to write it all out twice.

Short version: working on ad for ConDFW to go in the Worldcon program book (full page this time!), and am soliciting feedback. I want it to stand out from the general run of con ads, but not to look too slick, like a Creation Con.

cut for wall of text explaining what I'm doing to designers unfamiliar with SF cons. There's a link to a page with all 10 designs on it under there.Collapse )

PLEASE NOTE: The faint lines that make borders on some of the images are my guides for the bleed and the live area and will NOT appear in the final version.

Woo LJ poll code is brokedy for poll items with links! If you don't have a DW journal to vote in the much nicer poll there, you'll need to go to this link to see all of them. The number is ABOVE the image it corresponds to.
