mello hates you

come for the manga, stay for the snark

5/6/08 12:32 pm

I was reading a guest article on the Get Rich Slowly blog complaining about wedding registries, wherein it mentioned that the author hated having gifts sent to the couple and preferred bringing them to the wedding with her. And it wasn't until comment #35 that someone pointed out what proper etiquette says, and also what I think: bringing gifts to the wedding Just Isn't Done, because the couple are, 9 times out of 10, not going back home after the ceremony and thus have to figure out what to do with all the gifts. Especially so if the wedding is not taking in the same city, state, or country that the couple live in.

So therefore I turn to the internets to find out why people bring gifts to the ceremony...

3/10/08 10:42 pm - Crockpots & hair

Re: crockpots: [info]yhlee and anyone else who has a slow cooker and not yet tried the slow cooker plastic liners: I've now tried one and it is muy excellente. You put it in your crock and fold it down over the pot as a whole, put your stuff in, pop the lid on and cook. After it's done and you eat, you empty it out, wait for it to cool, then lift out the dirty liner and toss it in the trash. You only have to clean the lid of the crockpot. Yay! Might get expensive if you cook several times a week - I think I paid $4-5 for the box of four liners, but as I hate hate hate washing the thing since it's so heavy, I find it well worth the expense. Especially as I use the slow cooker on the order of once a month. :D

And now for the hair! Since [info]rachelmanija is viciously off having a life or something and not sitting by her computer awaiting my email and giving me instant feedback on hair, I turn to the internet. I'm updating the hair for Rivas and Jordan in Project Blue Rose* so they will have hair with actual style and not my Generic Default Guy Hairstyles.

Why I'm doing it right now? Because at lunch today I was in line at Subway behind this Hispanic kid from the local high school who had Rivas' exact hair - lovely, thick, glossy, black, straight - and it was artfully cut into a style that I figured Jordan would drag Rivas off to a salon somewhere and make him get. Similar to his previous one-length bob (see icon), with slight layers at the end to make it move, and shorter lengths around the face, swept to one side.

Rivas now gets to grouse about his hair always being in his face.

I'm also working on a new 'do for Jordan, which will have life and movement and not be so damn hard to draw. (For a simple style like he had before, it was damn hard to do consistently.)

Here's the poll I threatened, about the AWESOMETASTIC MANGA OF AWESOMENESS. With luck [info]rachelmanija will receive it today, although with the weather between her location and mine, I fear it's more likely to be tomorrow or Monday. I hope tomorrow, at least, as I've got to work the Ref desk on Saturday.

Because I am bored and you guys have not been posting enough comments to entertain me today, my mind has therefore seized upon the potentially very dangerous ideas of actually posting the Bleach story to the Pit of Voles, er ff.net. As this could indeed be very dangerous, I therefore turn to the intarwebs to make my decision for me.

11/4/07 01:03 pm - Scientific Experiment Results!

So, I've tallied up the results of the SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT from this post.

So...did the average of all of you guys' guesses get anywhere near the actual number of popcorn kernels in the Sanzo shot glass?

Drumroll, please.......... )

11/1/07 10:14 pm - Guess the number! SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT!

So the other day I was listening to a podcast that talked about "the wisdom of crowds." This is the title of a book that talks about collective decision making and how, in some particular circumstances (most often is situations where there is a precise, quantifiable answer to be had), a correct, or at least the closest to correct, answer can be got from averaging together all the answers. You can read about it and the bull-weight-guessing experiment in 1906 that produced this phenomenon at Wikipedia or here.

At my work's Hallowwen party, we had a guess-the-number game similar to the bull's weight guessing game mentioned in the above links. Over in the section of the room that was dedicated to dead druggie celebrities, there was a small display that featured the powdered innards of Pixy Stix cut into lines with paper razor blades, and a glass jar full of candy that looked like pills,* and the game was to guess the number of pills in the jar. I asked if I could have the guesses afterwards, to test out this theory, and they gave them to me. Sure enough, it turned out that the average of all the guesses was fairly close to the actual number in the jar. And throwing out the two outliers - someone guessed 1000 and someone guessed 83 - the average was closer to the actual number than the closest individual guess.

* Er, the Social Committee is nicely twisted. :D

Now, we only had 13 guesses and I suspect that it would have gotten much closer to the real number if we'd had more, but it was still quite interesting. And I want to try it again, with more guesses. So I'm doing something similar here. Of course, I have no idea if a picture of the container will be the same as looking at it, but them's the breaks. :)

There's no prize, sorry to say. You'll have to do this entirely for the good of science.

So ... Guess the number of popcorn kernels in the Sanzo shot glass!

7/12/07 10:11 pm - QUIZ TIME!

Remember the Cracktastic Quiz I threatened you with earlier? Well, here it is! And I got enough suggestions that it's damn long! I didn't even use HALF of the suggestions I got. :)

I *think* I didn't screw up and leave the correct answer off of any one of them, but I might have, so that's always an option. Also, there may be more than one statement that applies to the same series, so just because you marked it earlier doesn't mean it's not another answer. :)

Will post the answers in another post, at some point in the future.

I TOTALLY MEAN IT )

6/29/07 09:32 am - Fashion crisis!

I've been shopping for the Japan trip, keeping in mind that the climate of the area of Japan that we'll be in at the time of year we'll be there, is much like that of Atlanta. So everything I've been getting is lightweight. Naturally, this year the only lightweight pants out there are all cropped above the ankle or are capris (mind you, I'm short enough that a capri is not actually a capris on me).

Now, I've got this weird thing about pants short enough to show my socks: they make me feel like an incredible dork in highwaters. Which means I'm going to be dorky for the entire trip, since there's no way I'm walking around all day and not wearing socks with my shoes - I blister way too easily for that.

So, I consult the internets. If it makes any difference, these are the shoes I've got that I will probably be wearing. :)
