Nifty quick tutorial on drawing backgrounds with Copic marker. ZOMG I must practice these.

12:29 pm - Questions...

...for you researchers out there bored on a Friday afternoon.

1) What was the biggest-selling American comic book ever, and how many copies did it sell?

2) How many copies does an average popular American comic book sell?

It's not a quiz - I don't know the answers. I'm just trying to gather comparison numbers for the presentation on manga that I've giving at a district library association conference tomorrow. People like numbers. I've found that popular manga magazines tend to sell about 5 million copies per week in Japan.

ETA: I need to know this because I am trying to show how small the American comic-book industry is compared to Japan's manga industry.

02:55 pm - Aaaand... one more request!

One of the things I'm doing with this presentation is creating a handout of recommended manga for libraries to stock. I'm looking for recommendations. But I need a little more than just titles, because (1) I'm pressed for time and can't do it all myself and (2) I need to give some pertinent info to allow librarians to make the choice about what ages it aims for, and whether their community standards allow for it.

I have defined shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei, and boys' love already in the talk, and will probably put the definitions on the handout.

Blade of the Immortal - Seinen. Semi-historical action manga set in feudal Japan. Manji, a swordsman cursed with immortality until he can kill one thousand evil men, travels with teenage girl Rin to avenge the deaths of her parents at the hands of a rival school of swordsmanship. Not suitable for younger teens: violence, language, some sexual situations. 17 volumes available in the U.S., series unfinished and still publishing.
Something like that (only if you can make it sound more appealing, go for it. XD)

Series I want to mention, to give you ideas:

Rurouni Kenshin
Saiyuki/Saiyuki Reload
Fruits Basket
Hunter x Hunter
W Juliet
Samurai Deeper Kyo

It needs to be skewed to manga that are currently in print and/or available. (i.e. Rurouni Kenshin is finished, at 28 volumes, but they're still in print and available. Moto Hagio's Four Shoujo Stories is a classic, but is out of print and if you ever find a copy for $50 or less purchase it immediately and I WILL PAY YOU BACK NO MATTER WHAT.)

Is there anyone online tonight that has a photo of a really stunningly elaborate cosplay costume that will impress even people who have never seen cosplay before?

And does anyone have photos of cosplay chess I could use?
